As someone who does lunch duty with first-graders, I am always surprised at how much of their food they throw away. Several of my students don’t eat ANYTHING at all for lunch, and that includes those who bring lunch from home as well as those who buy at school or get free lunch. And lest you believe those who say we don’t give the students any options, there are ALWAYS two choices in addition to the daily offering of peanut butter and jelly (two flavors of jelly, no less). And believe me, the food they’re getting now is WAY better than what we were getting in the Reagan and Bush eras.
